Understanding Cat Behavior

Many people believe that a cat works to its own schedule, and as long as the cat has a clean litter tray, food and water, it will not bother paying much thought to its owner. However, every now and again cats behave in a strange manner which makes it difficult for the owner to establish exactly what the cat wants. Here are some ways to help you solve the mysteries of the cat's behavior.

A cat will push its head into any place or object where it can, for example, usually against the leg of a table, or a television stand. You will notice that your cat behaves in this way when you have other people at your home, who either suffer with allergies or have pets of their own. When the cat becomes aware of them he will push his head against them, and put a little bit of his saliva on the person. In the cat's mind, this is ownership whatever his saliva is on belongs to him. The saliva becomes a familiar scent for him and while this may be annoying both for you and your visitors, you must accept that the presence of another person in your home appears strange to your cat. Therefore, the cat is merely trying to make the stranger belong within his territory and in the cat s mind brushing up against the visitor and putting his scent on them will do just that.

Although marking someone or something in this way helps the cat, saliva is one of the main forms of allergies amongst pets. If someone attempts to wipe the saliva off them, the scent will fade and disappear and the cat will undoubtedly try to do it once more. It may seem that cats aim this behaviour at people with allergies, but in fact they are just attempting to make the visitor belong to the house. If your guest really cannot cope with the saliva, let the cat rub himself against their pants a few times. More than likely the cat will then leave the person alone.

If your cat is strictly an indoor animal, you can expect he will spend most of this time lying close to the window. He may make strange noises or movements but don t despair, he is just acting out his hunting skills. The cat will notice the movement of anything outside and this will put him into hunting mode. You are probably already aware that cats just love to play and to be played with. They will pounce on toys in play and this is normal behavior. If you try to stop the cat playing in this way, he will adopt a negative approach and he will play with things he shouldn t. Toys do not need to be expensive.

Your cat will get much pleasure playing with you chasing a piece of string as anything else. The longer you have a cat the stranger the behavior you will see him display. Cats always have a reason for behaving as they do, and if you can make an effort to begin to understand the reasons for such strange behavior, you will have no problems keeping him fit, healthy and happy.
