How to Give Your Cat a Pill
Trying to give your cat a pill can be a difficult task. As would be expected, a cat does not want to have something thrust down its throat and he will do everything he can with his new found strength to stop you getting the pill to stay down. Here are a few tips for success when giving your cat a pill.
The most straightforward way to give your cat a pill is to crumble it between the backs of two spoons and then mix the powder into some wet cat food. Most cats eat dry food so the wet food containing the pill will appear to be a treat for the cat and he is sure to eat it, totally unaware that the pill is in it. If the medication is in the form of a capsule, there is no need for any crushing, just simply open the capsule and pour the powder directly onto the wet cat food. If your cat is sick, the pill will not be digested and in this case it is best to use a pet piller. This is a handy piece of equipment which can be purchased from the vets. It is a plastic rod which holds the pill until you have it positioned in the pet s mouth and you release the plunger. They come in various shapes and sizes but a long one with a soft end is probably best. Your vet will show you exactly how to use it but you are likely to find the most difficult part is actually keeping your cats mouth open. Keep a tight hold of him making sure he does not wriggle free of your grip. Once you have managed to do this popping the pill and getting it to go down will not be a problem.
A treat is always welcomed by the cat after the pill has been taken. If you are really not comfortable with using the piller gun you could always try giving the medicine by hand. Sit the cat still, open his mouth with your free hand and aim for the back of the throat as you drop the pill in. Once the pill is in place close his mouth and hold it closed for a moment. At this point the cat is likely to swallow but if he doesn t a gentle stroke under the chin will do the trick. If all else fails and you cannot administer the medication by any of the above methods, the pharmacy will always make up a flavored gel or liquid to mask the medication. This is an expensive way to do it so should only be used as a last resort.
